I have cable internet and digital voice. My cable provider (Comcast) said I needed to rent their modem, which is a RCA DHG535-2. I don't like being forced to rent equipment that you need to have for the service to work so I've been looking for a modem to purchase and I found a RCA DHG535. Does anyone know what the difference is between the DHG535 and the DHG535-2? I have not been able to find any info, even on the manufacturer's website.

I can only offer an educated guess that the -2 has a firmware specifically tuned to the Comcast network. The other one may or may not work but you would need Comcast to authorize it anyway before it would work. From what you say, it sounds like they would not want to do that.

What I have here is Comcast on a straight Motorola SB5100 modem which I own and I use Packet8 for my VoIP service and it works flawlessly. The Packet8 is about 27.50 per month including all of the additional fees. It also includes everything you can get on a phone including voice mail, call forwarding, call waiting and Unlimited Calls to the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Guam and calls to land lines in France, Italy, Ireland, Spain and United Kingdom. I'm well into my third year with Packet8 and have no complaints.

Bosch44
have you found the solution to this issue?

I am also interested in purchasing rather than monthly renting the Comcast modem.

Thanks in advance.

when it comes to set top equipment like a digital box to get all the channels cable has to offer, it is agianst fcc regulations for the cable company to force you to use their equip, thats why they came out with the cable card. i would assume the same is true for cable modems. if you call your cable company and speak with the "right person" they should be able to supply you with a list of compatible modems which you could purchase. the only downfall is that in most cases if you need a service call and it is related to the cable companys equip many times they will not charge for the service call or they will replace the faulty equip ie.(the modem) for free, if you own your own modem and it is the source of the problem you most likely will be charged for the service call and have to purchase another modem if it goes bad.

i just went to comcast website and checked under contact us. it allows you to ask questions and gives you a general or specific answer. it appears that in some areas you CAN purchase your own emta as long as it is compatible. you should have no problem with the rca dhg535. as far as the -2 , it appears to be only comcast related. so i would assume as shnerdly stated it probably has to do with firmware.

I've just learned from Comcast Live Chat that if you have the phone service (along with the cable and internet) then you must rent from Comcast, no alternative. I was frustrated for the fact that no one at Comcast told me about the added rental fee (and it's the "forever" fee!) until it appeared on the second bill. The first one followed the service installed were very confusing with the one-time connection charge, initial HDTV equipment, prorated credit and newly prorated service fees lumped into one amount. I was not aware that the $6.00 rental (for digital voice) was part of the sum. The customer support person couldn't break everything down clearly for me on the phone.
As for the RCA model DHG535, it is not the same as the model DHG535-2 that we rent from Comcast. The one without -2 doesn't have the telephone connection for the digital voice hook-up.
Any more questions, you should contact Comcast support people. I like the live chat the most. Gook luck

here at insight communications we install the dhg535 model more than any other. it does indeed support two telephone connections for digital voice hookup.

the -2 is only related to comcast and must be something they improvised.

i dont know if comcast has their own switches or not , but the 6 bucks might be what they charge to connect you to the switch if they have to rent access to it.

if the customer service rep wasnt clear , call back and ask to speak with a (lead) or supervisor.

Well I have a linksys rt-31p2-al and I can tell you that it can only be used with phone power voip, I have tried to flash, but however it is locked to their server, and can only accept upgrades from their server, so they have prevented me from using any other companies that provide voip. The only alternative is to use a packet logger, and get the ip of the server that it looks to, and maybe a slim chance to configure a machine on your lan to impersonate that ip. Probably easier to just get another provider, I have had good success with Lingo and phone power, both charge reasonable monthly fees, and unless your are using at & t, (dsl) who block ports sometimes for voip.

Good luck with Comcast. I purchased a brand new telephony modem from the manufactorer Arris and it took 2 months for their tech (comcast) to come to my house and simply call in the numbers on the back of the device which I had done myself twice before by phone and 3 times by email. Been using my own modem for about a year and now comcast is telling me that the telephony modem wont work on their system and yet it is over that same modem this is getting to you. Comcast is the classic example of the right hand having absolutely no idea what the left hand is doing and visa versa. I am going to FTA TV, VOIP phones, Internet fax and will cut Comcast down to internet ONLY.

I have the RCA Cable Modem Model DHG535-2 from Comcast and it will not issue WAN ip address to my D-Link Wireless Router DIR-655.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you contacted your ISP??

There are a lot of possibilities, mostly related to the ISP or a bad or improperly setup router.

Is this a new router installation or was it working and then quit??

If this is a new installation, you MUST restart the modem and start all of the equipment on you network in the proper order for things to work.

This may help.
