I have had roadrunner forever. Bought a 4 port router and was able to connect both to the internet. Well the modem died and they came out and installed a new modem and ever since then, I cannot connect via the router. Only if one is connected directly to the cable modem can I get a connection. When both are connected via the router, neither computer gets a connection. Have they rewired these modems to prevent people from networking computers and if so, is there a way around this. I really don't want to have to pay for two separate connections/modems.

It would be helpful to know more details.

What was the old modem brand and model?

What is the new modem brand and model?

What is the router brand and model?

In general, any cable modem should be able to work with a router.

You may need to initialize your router to the new modem. To do this you need to turn everything off, including the modem and router. Unplug the modem and router to turn them off.

Make sure all of the cables are connected properly.

This is important Start the modem by plugging it in but leave everything else off. Give it about a minute to completly boot.

Next start the router by plugging it in. Give it about a half minute to boot.

Now turn on your computers. You should be online.

If your not online at that point, do a hard reset on the router. With most routers this is done by pressing and holding the reset button for about 20 to 30 seconds while the router is on.

Now repeat the steps above again starting with everything turned off.

Holy, Moly. that worked. Finally. I had tried everything you had mentioned even resetting the router. The important thing you mentioned which was the key, is letting the modem start up completely, then the router. I had gone the motions a hundred times, but you did it. When I mentioned this to roadrunner tech support that said that I wouldn't be able to do it, they didn't say why, but tried to lead me to believe that they had done something to prevent people from networking. I knew they were leading me astray.

Thanks man.
