I currently have AOL as my ISP. I would like to drop AOL to save money and just use my DSL provider, Bell South. My problem is that I have hundreds of Favorites marked and haven't found a way to transfer them to any other ISP or browser site. Additionally, there apparently any way to provide separate bookmarks. Any help appreciated.

This seems to be an ongoing issue about transfering favorites. There is a service that claims to be able to transfer all your favorites, email, and address book to Internet explorer and Outlook or Outlook Express. The website is www.connectedsw.com. It is called ePreserver. It costs about 40 dollars for the program. I have not tried it. If anyone does try it, let me know how it works.

I have been searching for a way to transfer favorites from AOL and I know there is some software to help do that but I will have to get that info & pass it on. Some dialups claim they can transfer favs. when you quit AOL-- but AOL is resistant to letting some software work w/AOL to make transfer work. I have one practical suggestion--try looking over your favorites--w/ AOL some of the old favs. won't come up anymore-so just delete them and some may not even interest you anymore. AOL knows it can keep you signed up if you can't take favs. I have heard they can be printed out but dont know how to do that. I have been recording my favs. & addresses by [yikes] hand. I have a few hundred favs and think its worth the effort so I don't feel captive w/AOL. AOL is somewhat ruthless about certain things & I am over them. All my favs.-- can be found again--I encourage everyone to consider this. Use Firefox to search asap and begin to bookmark sites there--you can access those no matter what ISP you have.

To save Favorites, go to favorites menu and right click, when menu pops up, select "send to" and save in a folder on your c: drive, then when you are on other internet provider, click on link, then save in that isp as a fav. I don't know any other way and I am hoping someone shares how to save aol address book and transfer to other isp.

Another option is to send you new address in an email from your aol address and ask them to email you at your new address on other isp. Then select save address.

To copy your favorite sites from AOL to Internet Explorer, use the following steps for each favorite that you want to save
1. Connect to AOL, and then open the Web page inside the AOL
browser.
2. Right-click within the page, and then click Add to Favorites.
3. Follow the steps in the Favorites wizard to add the favorite to
the appropriate menu item.
NOTE: This information applies to the 32-bit versions of AOL. These steps do not work for AOL-only sites and locations.

I found KG's answer on the Microsoft website - but it didn't work for me. When I clicked 'add to favourites' it appeared to save it and if I saved the same site again it said it was already saved - but I don't know where it was saved - it didn't appear as a favourite in Internet Explorer. The only way I have found is to open up a favourite from AOL then copy the address and paste in into Internet Explorer, open the web-site - then save it as a favourite. It's a bit long winded but it seems to work!

So, I think I have an answer to a similar question: How to transfer your Address Book from AOL to a new email client (eg, Thunderbird). Here's the drill:
- In AOL's address book, click on one address then "Select ALL" (eg, Cntl-A), then "Copy" (eg, Cntl-C).
- Open Excel or another spreadsheet; paste into a worksheet (eg, Cntl-V); you'll see your correspondent (LN, FN) and email address, separated by a Tab. Widen the first column, if necessary.
- Do any editing, deleting.
- Do a "Save As..." and for file type, select "TAB-DELIMITED CSV" or just "CSV (Windows)" and save it to a familiar place (I give it the name "AddrBookFeb06.csv").
- In your email client (eg, Thunderbird -- should be similar on others), Select "Tools/Import..." or similar, select the "CSV/TEXT/ETC" option, and browse to the CSV file's location.
- Complete the Import, and you'll find all our AOL addresses in your new program. Not quite the way you'd like them (it won't import phone numbers, etc, and the LN,FN are all in one field), but this new Address Book is now available.
- You can use them this way: select the new Book (give it a name - "Addresses from AOL"). Thunderbird will find them by alias, FN, LN, start of email, etc.
- I'd copy (Cntl-A, then drag) these into the Personal Address Book, then edit them when you have time, to change them to true FN and LN fields. I like to have mine sort this way "LastName, FirstName".
See if this general technique works for you -- perhaps a similar method would work for AOL's "Favorites".

There is also a program out there called TrueSwitch. I believe the link is www.trueswitch.com it is free if you are swiyching to certain providers. Ask you current ISP how you can transfer your faves from AOL to them.

If you're familiar with perl or cygwin's utils or anything similar, there's an easier way.
In AOL's favorates window you can save the favorites do disk in AOL's stupid binary proprietary format. If you look inside it (in notepad, for example) you'll see that the URLs and names of your bookmarks are all in there as text strings. I used the cygwin command "strings aolfavorites.p* > favorites.txt" and was then able to use notepad to make a HTML file of all my old favorites. A perl script that keeps only printable characters would work just as well

AOL has us by the short hairs.........they make it so u can't d/l your favorite to another server...........they want to keep us.....FORGET IT AOL, u really stink. i'll take all year to get my favorites back, a day at a time, but AOL will never have me back as a customer..........i think AOL is one giant virus all by itself.

I want to discontinue using AOL and use my Cableone account only. I have heard that I can keep my old AOL screen name. Being able to keep my old screenname would mean I would not have to contact all my addressees to update tehm on my new address. I am bundling my tv/voip, etc under Cableone and want to save money by killing off the redundancy of AOL. Help??

Well, it sounds like you've got it under control.
What help do you need?
Personally, I would change to the Cableone email and get rid of the AOL one. Just send an email to everyone on your AOL list.
If you want to export your AOL address book, one of the links above might help.
This thread is very old I'm locking it. If you need your AOL Favorites back, read the thread. There's plenty of help already in it.
