Welcome to the forum David Wright.

Is the router new? Are you trying to connect the laptop with the wireless or with the ethernet.

I will assume your desktop is working correctly and you are trying to connect the laptop wirelessly. I would suggest resetting the router to its factory settings and then follow the steps in the following post.
Basic Networking Help

If you have success with the startup procedure you should go in to the router and change the Password, SSID and Default Channel. I will also suggest setting up MAC Address Filtering. I'm not up to speed on Netgear routers but it should be under the wireless section. Set it up to deny access to all wireless connections except the ones you place in the list. Be sure to enter your laptops wireless MAC address before you update the page or you will lose access.

I would need to know a lot more information to help you.

Do you have an ISP and a Cable Modem?

Who is the ISP and what brand of modem?

Is your internet currently working either on your desktop or laptop?

Hi,
I have cable internet for my e machine pc and I need to purchase a laptop for college. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on which laptop and which router I need to purchase. Also I am very computer illiterate and could use some advice on how to go about setting all this up.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Christy

I only run IBM Think Pad Laptops because I like the stability. Any new laptop should be good. I know Dell is now offering some with XP on them again if that matters.

As far as the router goes. I would recommend the Linksys WRT54G. In all my time in networking I have found it to be the most reliable. I recommend avoiding the 802.11N equipment both in the router and in the laptop. The "N" technology has proven itself to me to be flaky at best.

This may help you understand the configuration for the network.

Welcome to the forum newuser2027.

The setup for your hardware as you described it should be as follows.

Turn all of the equipment off including removing the power cord from the router, Lingo Box and Cable Modem.

I'm not familiar with the 2wire router, but I would recommend resetting it to factory defaults prior to starting the network. Check the user manual for how to do this.

Then make your ethernet connections. From the modem, connect an ethernet cable to the WAN or Internet port on the Lingo Box. Then connect another ethernet cable from the LAN or Computer port on the Lingo box to the WAN or internet port on the Router. Then connect the rest of your wired computers to the remaining ethernet ports on the router.

This is important. Now turn the equipment on in the following order. Turn on the Cable Modem only and allow it a full minute to boot. Next turn on the Lingo Box and give it also about a minute to boot. Next turn on the router and allow it to boot. Now you can turn on your computers as you wish.

Please let us know if this information was helpful.

OMG!! You rock!! Its working!!! Thank you so much. You have no idea how long I have been trying to figure this out, but I was completely bypassing the Lingo box, as far as plugging thje cable from Wan to the wan in the 2wire back to the PC .
Thanks again. Great job. I really appreciate this.

Have AT&T 2wire wireless gateway I am using for home LAN. Just purchased a new Dell Laptop with Intel 5100 Wireless-N(1X2) Half Mini-Card installed. Do I use the Gateway CD disc to install the laptop or just boot up laptop and try to get to Internet?
No fancy name terminology as 77 yrs old and slow unless have printed instruction!

The laptop should have a connection utility for the wireless connection. Use that to find the wireless gateway and you should be able to tell it to connect. If the gateway uses encryption, you will need to know the pass phrase or key code.

There shouldn't be any "setup" to run to access the gateway from the laptop. The laptop should already have a utility installed that allows you to scan for wireless access points. Use that utility to find your gateway and connect to it.

I have anHP G70-246us notebook. I am visiting my daughter out of state tomorrow. She has a desktop and I'm wondering if I can plug my wireless laptop into her desktop or something to use internet while I'm there.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If she has a broadband internet connection, you should be able to connect to it. Perhaps through a wireless connection if it's available and you have a wireless card in the computer. Otherwise, if she has a router, plug your computer into it by way of the ethernet port.
