ace5high	# Posted: 7 Oct 2009 21:36 Without using wireless Is it possible to use multiple cable modems in different rooms on multiple computers? Here is why I ask... My cable network has to be setup downstairs because it needs to be in the same room as a phone jack for my digital phones to work. but I want to use my upstairs computer on the network without going wireless. There is NO CAT5 or phone line in the upstairs at all only line is a cable connection, If I buy a second "generic" cable modem could I use it on the upstairs computer on the same network? Why or why not would this work?

You can add a cable modem to your account but you will be charged for a separate additional internet service. The cable modem would have to be added to your account for it to connect to your ISP's network. Cable modems do not communicate with each other directly. They have to go through a server somewhere that identifies them by their MAC address. The server then relays the information from one place to another. Because a server is required, the two computers in your home on two separate modems will not be on the same network inside your home and will not be able to communicate with each other without going through the internet. Wireless or cat5 are almost the only options. There was a networking system that uses the power lines inside your home but I'm not sure it's still around and it was very slow, like 2 or 3mbps.
