I bought my own cable modem 3 years ago so I wouldn't have to pay the extra costs for the Modem. Each timne my router goes down do the power cycling bs and no change, but when I call in the tech tells me to do the same thing and then it starts to work and they didnt do anything. WTF! I know when they are lying because I work for another service provider. ( I use comcast cause its faster than DSL,eventhou uploads is slower than dial up sometimes) . I think I'd be better off getting a line from my company.

i think we should get together and try a class action lawsuit against comcast. I am sure they are prohibiting users who want to use their own routers. somewhere in the legal mumbo jumbo that must be against the law.

I have my own modem and have excellent speed with Comcast.

I'm using a Motorola SB5100 and a Pentium Pro 200Mz machine with 384MB RAM for a firewall/router running IPCop software.

I don't agree that comcast is horrible, but maybe you should upgrade to a T1 Line?

comcast is the fastest service you will find, done deal...wireless sucks, thats all there is to it, get another modem and hook up direct. and the perfect signal for a modem is 0 dbmv. Ive only worked in the telco world for 9 years

Comcast service has not made me happy. Charter, when I had it, was 10x better. I'm sure it has to do with the area I live in now having a much higher number of users on the WAN. Resetting the power to the SB5120 modem speeds it up for a couple of minutes and then it's back down to dialup speeds. Same thing happens when I bypass the router...speeds up for a bit and then I'm in slow land again...573 kbps download and 47 kbps upload. Cable guy has been here three times and no resolution has ever occured. Comcast has my vote for worst service ever.

Hi can some one tell me how to open the comcast modems and bypass them
so i can get the high speed but not pay the internet bill just the ormal cable tv bill

What i have to weld and all that stuff

There is not a way to "open the comcast modems". The modem is a network device that has to connect to Comcasts network in order for you to get cable internet. It connects by way of specific permission granted by Comcast based on your modems MAC address.

I heard that Comcast is throttling the connection if they determine that you have a router. I have been experiencing the same trouble and I called Comcast technician, who blamed the router. A friend suggested that I change the router's mac address to that of my laptop. This way Comcast server will be fooled to think that I am connecting a computer, not a router.

Routers and Computers do not have different types of MAC addresses. That is to say that Comcast can not tell if a device is a Computer or a Router based on the MAC address. They can tell the difference but it has nothing to do with the MAC. It's determined by the response they get when the device is queried. In general, a computer responds to an external query where a router rejects an external query.

Comcast doesn't care if you use a router or not. They do not "Throttle" connections based on the devices they can detect. They do throttle based on traffic patterns. When there is a lot of activity on a given node they will throttle it to manage the load on the server. When traffic on a given node gets too high consistently, they will split it to 2 or more nodes and add the necessary servers.

Your service through Comcast is throttled, usually at about 6MB download and 768K upload. If you use a router, your bandwidth doesn't change but it does get divided and distributed between the computers on your network based on demand priorities. If one computer is setup to be a peer-to-peer server with a service like Kazaa or one of the other p2p services, it will dominate the bandwidth on your connection and cause the other computers connections to be slowed down considerably.

i was having the same problem... Comcast HSI (which by the way i get blazing speeds on 25mbs down, 7mps up) and a Belkin wireless router. Comcast came, set up my laptop to work with their service, works great, and when they left i added in my router. Worked fine for a long time, then started to drop the internet connection about 1x a day, which required me to do hard reboot of both cable modem and router in proper sequence to get back on line. Very frustrating. Both logs from the cable modem and router show nothing unusual. Thought about buying a new router but not sold that the newer N draft routers are any better than the older ones right now. No firmware upgrades available. So.. i read all the bulletins. Nothing caught my eye until i read something about IP address shortage, and registered MAC address. So i tried this... Clone your MAC address to your router. This sets the MAC address of the router to match the MAC address of your computer that Comcast set up (and registered in their database). My theory is that perhaps Comcast is doing a "Ping" if you will for registered MAC addresses on a standard interval, and when it saw the MAC address of my router it was disconnecting it. Now that the router MAC address is a clone of my laptop, when/if Comcast does this discovery "ping" for unregistered MAC addresses, it now sees the correctly registered MAC address for my account (cloned from laptop to router), and does not disconnect. Just a theory, but since i've done this i have not gone down. Good luck.

It may be that cloning the MAC in the router reset some piece of corrupt data in the router fixing the problem.

I can assure you that Comcast doesn't care weather you do or don't have a router. In fact if you have Comcast come out and setup your home network, they will install a router to accomplish the task.

FYI - The Linksys 802.11G routers are still available almost everywhere in the US. Their having a hard time with the "N" routers because the different brands aren't always compatible with each other. For example, if you have a Dlink adapter and a Belkin router you may not be able to connect at all. If it does connect, the connection may be erratic. Also their rearward compatibility with the "B" and "G" equipment was still very poor the last time I checked.

I've heard that their working on these problems but I haven't heard of any positive results yet.

I also am having the same issue with a Linsys router and i'm in Atlanta. It was working fine and then all of a sudden- it stopped. The tech did come out and fix some issues he thought may be the problem but I knew they wernt and they just want to charge me a high fee to install their equipment. The bottom line is that by the time you pay for the modem, install and service every month- you'd be better off getting a wifi usb and doing it that way. You get to take your internet with you and if you make up a code- then when it's in the area of your other laptops I believe you can connect to it.

I know the conspircy is true about Comcast. Has everyone ever asked them to just send the modem- they won't! You must have someone come and install it but why- it's easy as pie to hook it up. It's because they need you to pay all that money to hook it up that's why. Ever asked them to help you with the confirguaration of the router- that's also a no. OMG- I'm going to need comcast to get their life together!

just tested my system and dial up is running faster and they tell me everything is fine . if this is 20 mbs they can keep it.

Hmmm... It's 2009, and Comcast is still at it. I have exactly the same damn problem. I pay an exhorbitant amount of money for their service, and have been for years... "16mb" service has never worked properly, and now that I'm being billed seperately for it, I'm getting really agrivated.

Comcast! It's time for some government regulation of this monopoly.

If your having problems with your service, call and complain. If they don't fix it, call your Attorney General and file a complaint with them. If enough legitimate complaints are filed they WILL fix the problem or loose their charter to operate.

If you think additional Government regulation is in order here, checkout every single thing the Government is currently regulating and you will find that the bureaucracy will increase the price and the level of service will decrease. The Government shouldn't be involved in any aspect of private enterprise.
