check out my problem.. i'm having the same exact weirdness, i'm using comcast and have a wireless router connected to the cable modem. This problem just started happening about 2 days ago and i'm getting pissed. Connecting the cable modem directly to my pc i get speeds of 500kbps+ and if use my wireless i goes up to like 300kbps and then it starts going downhill from there but. Although i do notice that on my Mac the speeds stay up around 350 or so and on my pc the speeds are embarrasing as dialup sometimes even 14kbps which is horrific. I called comcast and of course nothing is wrong with my connection WTF. i wish there was another provider in my area cuz this brings back memories from the dialup years....

I'm having the same problem in Dallas as of three weeks ago. Went through the turn-off/rebooting scheme a few times with a Commiecast tech support guy and he concluded that the modem and computer were fine so it must be my router. I've been out of town for a few weeks and just got back and hooked up a new router. Same problem! Now tech support just says to set everything on auto-detect and that is all they can tell me about setting up a router. Something is fishy.

I'm in the same boat and use VOIP as my phone service. Sometimes google takes 15-20 secs to load. My phone will connect but as soon as someone answers the phone at the other end the call is dropped. I pay $60.95/mo for this garbage. Let's all call them today and give them shit. I install networks and configure POS terminals for a living and there's definitely skullduggery afoot!

I started comcast with the 3mb plan... I usually ran about 1.7-2.8 (not bad) But then comcast got the 6mb deal, so I paid the 10 bucks extra and my connection went up to 4.8-5.1mb (awesome). But then I had to connect a second computer, and through a router my connection dropped to about 2.2mb, AND ever since I upgraded, I have been getting a 300+ ping in games that I play against my neighbor who uses Qwest 1.5mb DSL... this is really sad. But now that Qwest has 896KB/7MB where I live, I think I will switch to them. I must have the second PC hooked up, and comcast says I wouldn't lose any speed, I lost over half! :(

the comcast problem is an IP exhaustion issue... i know here in atlanta they just added 500 IP addresses to 3 hubs and it reduced the hsi service calls by 2000 instantly. the product has just sold way faster than anticipated, the network wasnt ready to support all the traffic. i know the people on the phone dont know what they're talking about but you can mention the IP exhaustion issue and ask them to look into for your node. hopefully you'll get a hold of someone good... its simple to find when you look for it. they just need to see how many modems are on your port in the hub, and how many ip addresses are assigned to that port. 1 port is usually 2 nodes, approx. 400-600 homes per node.. the penetration rate for hsi was only projected at 10%. but its sold a lot faster than they anticipated. so lets say its 50 percent in your node.. and theres 500 homes in your node. thats 250 modems and remember there combined 2 nodes for each port on the cmts. so thats 500 modems on that port which was probably only assigned 100 or so IP addresses to pull from, based on the 10% projection. so during peak hours when theres more than 100 of those 500 modems surfing, numbers 101 and up will get "page cannot be found" the modem will stayed locked though, that still has pulls it IP from a different network, this is the computer's IP we're talking about that it has to pull from the dhcp server everytime you type in an address

Interesting this happend to me this week. I had 3 routers. So far 2 would not connect to the web (they would connect and via WAN and obtain and IP), but I could ping, ftp, and telnet. Could not VPN for work. I tried 2 routers on all 6 PC's I ahve and same results. Did all the power cycling hoopla. I have moved around quite a bit in my area and never had issues like this. When I did it was something on Comcast's end. So now I am on my 3rd router. Initially I had the same issue. But after my 3rd power cycle of router, PC, modem... I am online. But I did have the same result yesterday on my tried and true router and then web dropped. Speed has been average of 3MB dwn / 300Kb up. THey say we have 6MB dwn. But when we had 4/5 I was still at 3. But the whole thing was frustrating and the tech would say it is my router. Right....

Alright, I found a solution of sorts on another website. Basically what they done is they guarantee IPs to "registered devicees." i.e. the computer they connected the modem to when first installing it. The routers, however, are not registered devices, therefore they can get pulled off the network at anytime. And it seems to happen quite a bit.
All I did was change the MAC address of my router to the MAC address of the computer, and it works fine now. I'm getting the speeds that I should have been getting weeks ago.

I am on Comcast, and recently had a Comcast tech come in and replace the cable modem. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now again it's not working right
When I connect my PC directly to the modem, everything's fine
When I connect my router to the modem, it just is very slow, and sometimes I can't even get to the Internet. THe funny thing is that sometimes the ping to www.yahoo.com will be fine, but the Web site will not come up. Also, I noticed that web access to 192.168.100.1 (the cable modem's IP address) is itself extremely slow, but ping returns in <5ms. This may be a clue to what's happening? Any help, pointers appreciated

Without repeating everyone's problems with Comcast, the router and speed, all of it... it's been the same story here for months. I was ready to junk the router and get a new one but then I lost the connection all together. No cable light on the modem. Sending & receiving, but no cable. All looked fine while while it was dying a slow death so I couldn't peg the problem on the modem until I lost the light.
I took the modem down to Comcast today they handed me a new one, I hooked it up (with my old Netgear router) and registered it. Now I'm running like I did when I got the service. I know it won't last, they suck to be sure, but at least I've eliminated the equiment problem... THEIR equipment problem. Of course they're not going to offer it as a solution, they don't want to replace a million modems. If you're leasing their equipment it will cost you nothing to give it a shot. Maybe it will help. Better yet, get everyone you know with Comcast to go down there with theirs at the same time. Think mutiny.
BTW, I found this forum looking for the best router to use with Comcast. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It looks like I have the same problem here in Central Virginia. My wireless router worked fine for about a year, then suddenly the ethernet (cat5 cable) speed from it got very erratic. I got a new modem from the cable company (Adelphia), but it had no effect. The direct ethernet connection from modem to computer is terriffic. I don't see how it could be a cable problem, since the speed is OK without the router... I'm thinking it must have something to do with the router settings. I've got a Belkin Wireless G router. The wi-fi speeds seem OK so far, it's just a problem with the wired ports.
BTW, the cable tech said that they were going to start requiring a Docsis 2.0 cable modem in a couple of months, so I guess I'll keep the new modem... my old modem (the one I own) is a Docsis 1.1.

I am so glad I found this message board. I have spent MANY hours pulling my hair out, all with the exact same complaints as others are attesting to herein. Redo all, works for a while, then slows down. I am sick of reconfiguring the modem and router!! What gets me is when things are bad, and you call Comcast, and you get a message that they are experiencing higher than usually call volumes, they get on the phone and tell you they aren't having any problems. Baloney!!

Comcast detects the number of different MAC addresses going through the modem. I have 6.0Mb/s connection and the results are as follows:
1. One network card direct connection to modem = 6.0Mb/s
2. Router with 2 clients attached (1 wired, 1 wireless) = 3.0Mb/s max
3. Router with 3 clients = 2.0Mb/s max
3. Router with 4 clients - 1.5mb/s max
Router using DHCP.
Note. Upload speed is not changed (768Kb/s) regardless of number of clients attached. The tests were done using 3 different routers and each time the test was done, only 1 clients was active on the network.
Spoke to comcast tech support who said that the 6 Mb bandwidth would be 'shared equally between the number of clients on the network.' Before this he did say that 'comcast doesn't officially support routers.'

Where is the best site to test your speed? I get conflicting speeds at different places. i have been using CNET but even that is sometimes not correct It has said I am getting (On occasion) 12 and 15 MBps T3 speeds and yet comcast does not go that high (As far as I know. BTW - Comcast Cable Modem using RCA Modem!
Thanks

I have a weird one here...My home and my office (2 miles from my home) both have utilize a linksys wireless router and comcast high speed internet. I've noticed that my response time is night and day slower at home than my office. I have an older router (802 11b) at home. Does anyone know if this older router has issues in regards to response time. For the record, I can watch video flawlessly at my office, but at home, the video barely runs
I'm completely stumped. Help!

It's not Comcast it's your equipment. For those using Linksys routers, Linksys desn't even know the fix... Try this ...it works:
Linsys setup / basic setup, change the speed and duplex from 10 Mb half to "Auto" I have 6 Mbps with Comcast and without this correct setting I was only getting 4 Mbps......I now get well over 6 Mbps
Remember if it goes faster with a direct connect to a PC than through the router.... Hey!! its your router!! Duhhhh!!!

Try Internet standard MTU is 576 and MSS would be 536 more notes.
http://www.frugalsworld.com/tweaking/modem.shtml
Configure router and computer to these siting that should fix it.

Hello!
I hope someone can HELP! We have Comcast highspeed & thier VOIP service. On Friday we started having this intermittant connection problem. THE WIERD thing is we could still get email and use everything on our LAN the only thing we couldn't do is get on the internet using Explorer or Maxthon (any browser). We got a new router and tried conneting directly to the internet bypassing the router and we still couldn't get on. 5-10 minutes later we were able to get back on. We thought it might be McAfee so we uninstalled it...still didn't work.
ANY SUGGESTIONS??????
Thanks!

The thing is Comcast are in such a rush to be number 1 that they dont give a shit about the people they are ripping off, now I have 8mb cable and I do get 1mb plus download speeds but thats not my problem. I got the high speed crap for online gaming but now the pings are going from 20ms to over 1000ms in the middle of BF2 and Im close to grabbing a comcast employee on the street and shoving the cable modem right down his throat.
i pay 60 bucks a month and hearing some idiot who got the job because his brother or mother works there telling me to power cycle my modem i mean come on has power cycling your modem EVER fixed ANY issue with anyone?
they employee people who have no clue what they are doing and whos only skill is cut and paste or go down a check list over the phone just to annoy you

I have been having this sane problem for about a week now. Used to get upwards of 5 Mbps. Now, I'm lucky if I get 3. Very irritating. The internet has been ridiculously slow as well.

Comcast has problems in certain area and they cannot fix it. I had similar problems where I used to live which was midtown and Comcast checked it out and said it wasn't our house but the whole neighborhood. Also, make sure you have special splitters and cable company connections & accesories. Don't use or do your own, it will not work well most of the time.

yeah!!! same thing for me.
comcast, had one router, threw it out, bought a new one, problem continued... yes it does go 10x faster if i don't use the router (ie, connect directly to the cable modem)

Linsys setup / basic setup, change the speed and duplex from 10 Mb half to "Auto" I have 6 Mbps with
and could you give a little more help, like where do you find these options? is it on the modem itself, software.
