I checked around and seems like a lot of people are having the same problem! yet I can't find a solution.
I'm having BAD connection with Comcast when router is connected! This problem never happen before and suddenly just hit me a few days ago. If I connect the moden directly to one computer, then it is fine, but when ever I plug in the router the connection got messed up in a few mins.. I tried two different router, wireless and regular, and both had the same problem. If I unplug the power, the connection gets good for a few seconds and then went bad again. I'm pretty sure nothing is wrong with router cuz it's new, nor the cord because I replaced a new one.
And this only happend a few days ago, before last week we were still on good speed even with router and everything.

Dude same thing right here... Its crazy. A week ago it was workign fine now its really really really slow... It's getting pretty annoying, and im getting about ready to switch to SBC

Was getting 2.2mbps now 550kbps

Im Still having problems with COmcast. I noticed that it starts getting very slow after 6pm pst. During the day i have no problems. Whats up i going to switch to Verizon.

Comcast is experiencing dns server probles as well as just down right putting too many people on a line in an area. They have been keeping their lips shut as to what and why people al over the US are having these problems but they better get their act together soon. Friggin dial up is looking good about now

It is now May 17, I have been getting 30 to 50 kbps for the last three weeks to a month. I have tried everything to no avail. I broke down last night and ordered DSL from Covad. 30kbps is sick. I can talk faster than that!!!!

Replaced old belkin router with Linksys BEFSR41, Firmware Version:1.04.01, Nov 22 2004 straight out of the box. Timeouts now gone, download speeds @400Kbps.

I am having the same problem. Without a router, my internet connection is about 4000 kbp. When I connect through the router, the connection speed drops to less than 10 percent of that. I thought it was a bad router, so I bought a new one (different brand). The connection sped up for a while, but now it is slow again. If I remove the router and connect directly to the cable modem, I get my speed back. I also replaced my ethernet cables on the chance that one of them was sub-par, but this did not help. I hate to be a conspiricy theorist, but so far all of the evidence points to the fact that Comcast is throttling back connections if they detect a router that they are not collecting additional revenue for!

I have a cable router on my system and have received. 4000 kbit/second. When you go from a router to single and the other way around you do receive a new IP address. Check settings on both. IPCONFIG /all see if you are getting same DNS same / Same gateway. ETC. Remember that cable is shared bandwidth so you may not get 4000 kbits all the time. Also try pinging the default gateway with and without the router and see what the response time is. (Note make sure you are using comcast's default gateway and not the routers)
There is one more additional hop but times should be virutually the same. Also What Cable modem is being used and location. That may help to see if its within a certain area or widespread.

Thank you all for your postings. Have dial up at work and cable at home. Dial-up's faster for quite awhile now, SO much so lately I thought it must be my cable connection. Both use new G5 iMacs that should blaze! I have a Toshiba PCX200 Cable Modem w/5 yr warranty (it's about 2.5 yrs old now). THought it might be faulty. Someone told me there's a website to check speed receiving. (1) What is that site? (2) Shall I go to DSL? This is ridiculous! Thanks yr help.

Comcast is dishing out to third party the high speed deal. Ever since they tried to up it to 6 megz download there is speed and connectivity issues. Every tech I talked to claim that "bedrock" is at fault. The operators are quick to place the blame on your equipment, yet it has nothing to do with problem. Those telephone help desks are not answered by people who know whats going on. They have a script and they stick to it.

Same problem here, Mac or PC alike. I hope you've all been demanding your money back for the months you paid for unacceptable service. I know I did. Haven't had to pay my bill in 2 months!!
Funny side note: I asked if we should just go back down to the "normal" service for now, just to get me up and running, and the guy goes "Nooooooooooooooooo~~~~~~~"

I download the update F5D7230-4v3_US_5.00.04 from belkins website and it fixed my problem. Before update my downloads were 40Kbs and after 280Kbs.

Guys I have exactly same problem with Comcast. Few months ago it was 1.5 to 2.0mbps and I was impressed, now about 500-550kbps. First, I will try to upgrade router, than I will look forward for better resolution.

I'm having same issue with a Dell TrueMobile 2300 router. Direct connection works fine. Through the router it works normal for about 15 seconds (probably the time it takes ComCast to ascertain a router is connected) and then the latency jumps 10x (as determined by support tech: ~600ms versus an expected 50-75ms). Bandwidth is also reduced considerably. Almost like being assigned to a low priority queue. These issues coincided with a 30 minute cable TV outage...I have the combined service (first outage I recall in over a year). ComCast confirmed they were doing maintenance but were vague on the specifics. Several support calls have yet to yield solid results. They indicated at one time a problem communicating from their side to my cable modem: ultra high ping (hence the router is not even in the loop). I then demonstrated that by directly connecting my PC (and removing the router), that the problem goes away. When I asked another support person if ComCast had implemented router detection routines, he replied with the canned "ComCast does not support routers". I told him that wasn't my question and spoke to his supervisor who agreed the situation is strange but was reluctant to believe that such a policy would be implemented. He did remind me that routers are not supported and could be denied if ComCast chose to do so. I'm awaiting further information but let ComCast know that I will cancel them in a heartbeat and switch to DSL if they are intentionally sabotaging routers. They've been charging me for an address converter they picked up 15 months ago and attempted to charge me a $100 installation free under their free installation promotion. Detecting routers would not surprise me in the least.

Continuing from previous...
I think the conspiracy theory may be only half-right. (Note, I don't claim to have any proof). I can see ComCast wanting to get additional money from those that have routers and multiple PCs. I'm sure they will be happy to diagnose your "defective" router and sell you a ComCast approved one for $200 plus another $150 install fee. Once paid, you'll be back into the normal priority queue.
Probably an even bigger motivation is the droves of people who now use wireless and piggyback onto their neighbors' routers. What better way to get these people to sign up for their own service than introducing tremendous service degradation into shared connections?

Not really a router issue for me after all. A second PC was still connecting via wireless to the router. It was generating either excessive traffic or traffic that ComCast did not like. Why ComCast wasn't able to diagnose the traffic issue I don't know. Can't really blame them this time.
I still like the router conspiracy theory.

I have comcast high speed cable without a router. It is connected directly to my computer and i can download at top speed about 9kb/s. 9kb/s!!!! I have a brand new computer and a brand new motorola surfboard modem. I had a technition from comcast and he hooked up the coax cable going into my modem to his machine and he said it passed the test and said it was my computer that was the problem. my computer!!!!!!! Brand new. Anyone know what to do???

It's probably the same company, but Adelphia (Cleveland, OH area) is doing the same thing for me. HOWEVER, if I connect my computer via a non-wireless SWITCH it works fine - a wireless router, however, causes terrible results.
I can get speeds of 4000+ kbps direct (or via switch), but only 1/10 of that via a wireless belkin router. FYI - I have had the same problem with Comcast in the past (Indianapolis, IN). What's worse, wirelessly there are intermittent outages (i.e. my computers must request network addresses ever 30 min or so).
I noted that it is almost exactly timed by looking at an Instant messenger "signed off" log. This is NOT equipment specific: two cities, three different routers, two different modems, about 5 computers.
I have yet to find an answer, but would be interested to know if this IS something to keep people from having more than one computer per internet line...afterall, with an open network the industry could potentially lose on 8+ customers in an apartment complex via wireless.
Best of luck to everyone with their issues...hopefully it's an easy fix.

It seems that the same issues are happening to me in Virginia Beach, Virginia...My wireless router worked fine for months then suddenly the ethernet from modem stopped working. They sent out a tech with a new modem and now the router works like crap, but the straight ethernet to computer works fantastic. I see others have had the same issue and I gonna be very tired of this crap very soon.

Use a wireless router. Try with a D-LINK wireless. I had this problem fixed at my friend's place. Make sure the IP address is available on each system. Then unplug the power of the cable modem as well as the router. Make sure to turn back on all the systems, the modem and the router at the same time.
If possible change the Workgroup to the sameon all the computers.

I have a Motorola SB4220 SURFboard Cable modem and I tried using it on my new comp and it worked ok for like 3 days buut now dial up seems faster.....(download speeds for me right now are at a crappy 17.5kbps) I mean wats wrong?
My old comp works fine with the modem and downloads around 700kps
(I have no router)

I had the same problem. Used the bios upgrade button on the router web page. It indicated that there were no new bios upgrades. Called Teck they emailed a bios upgrade. Back up to speed.

same here i always check speed 3 times a week always 3500mbps plus (well for a year at that speed)and now for the last 2 weeks 1600mbps
there are 4 people on my road that i know with cable and all have dropped by the same amount it can't be all our routers besides we have disconnected them and rebooted and tested (at least i did) and did the cable cleaning bit as well, comcast claims it is us.and its like talking to a broken record

I am having the same problem with Comcast. It started about 6 weeks ago. I am ready to pull my friggin' hair out as their tech support has a a-b-c routine and is totally worthless. I am an MCSE, 23 years Tech, former Sun, IBM, etc. and while I can screw things up but this is something at Comcast. mpwolf@comcast.net

OK dudes/dudettes - I should've got more to the point in my prior post. Small little internal net - SMC Barricade Router - 3 years worked fine with Comcast broadband. Speed has varied all over the place during that time but it's much better than my years of 640K DSL, soooooo.... about 6-8 weeks ago my connection would mysteriously vanish. Yes - as many point out - Comcast's process (i.e., are you on a router? yes - OK, unplug the router, turn off all the power, etc...) that works but it's BS!!! When presented with the logic of "it worked fine for 3 years and JUST started doing this with the EXACT SAME EQUIPMENT", they mutter and fumble through how they want to help me. They may even believe it.. they just can't do it because it's not a 1st level problem! I fully understand DHCP, I have latest firmware, patches, blah, blah, blah!! As stated above - no problem for 3 years with same setup. I cannot believe it's anything but a problem created on the Comcast end either unintentional (poorly implemented upgrade) or intentional (conspiracy theory from prior post).
Definitely the DHCP leases come from different segments - direct connect is (67.xx.xx.xx) and connect via router is (24.xx.xx.xx). I've suggested there was an upgrade but they don't admit to it - and I certainly lean towards the conspiracy theory and believe they're throttling back. In Denver (where I'm at) - there's not a lot of others to choose from (I've had 'em all over the years). Wish there was more to investigate on the connection end.
On the speed end of things, Broadband is shared medium so the more people connected the slower you'll go due to packet collisions. It's one of the things presented by the anti-Broadband competitors but they're not at saturation most of the time and it's still faster than most. With 1/2 hour of repeated 'speed-test' I can range between 2100kBits-4300kBits (approx 265KBytes - 500+KBytes per second). Fine by me as long as I'm connected (which brings us back to the top....). My emails in a prior post if any have thoughts/suggestions/questions to correct the router problem (or proof of conspiracy <g>!).......

I am having this same problem. I have a Netgear router (wireless), which I use for my laptop when I am not in my home office. Comcast tech support was not only unhelpful but downright rude in insisting they do not "support" routers. Fine. I figured out how to turn it on myself ... and now the speeds are ridiculous!
However, I have to say, I had the same exact problem with BellSouth DSL ... so it may be a technical issue after all?
I am trying to figure out which router works best in these cases ... seems like some of you had suggestions ... can you let me know if your suggested routers are still "fixed"? I don't mind buying a new one - even a Comcast one - if it will resolve the issue.
