i have this when my connection is running:

DOWNSTREAM
Frequency 645000000 Hz
Signal to Noise Ratio 35 dB
QAM QAM256
Network Access Control Object ON
Power Level -1 dBmV

UPSTREAM
Channel ID 1
Frequency 31392000 Hz
Ranging Service ID 615
Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s
Power Level 43 dBmV

I have no Idea waht this means.

I am using a SurfBoard modem. I have eliminated my computer, and the router from causing the problem. I have eliminated the provider as the problem. It seems that my Playstation3 is killing my connection. i will provide a crash log the next time it happens.

So ... what does it all mean? this has been a recent problem. my connection is really good and then BOOM, dead. happens the most when I play online with the PS3.

Well, there is a couple of things that I am fairly curious about in your logs you have posted.

I noticed you are using DHCP instead of a static IP address routing. Normally, if you want the speed and don't want to worry about all that madness about getting every little millisecond (ms) shaved off the ping time and other stuff. I would go with static routing from the modem router to the PS3 as well as on the computer. You can still have the firewalls engaged and that doesn't have a real negative impact on the performance.

What I have noticed is this, the DHCP and certain broadband modems are not "completely" compatible, they have varying standards and if you receive an update for either the console or the modem, that's enough to throw it off.

DHCP is great for people that don't want to screw around with routing configuration and tables but at the sacrifice of speed.

The other thing I noticed to be a bit odd is the CM Subnet Mask to:
255.255.224.0

The standard for LANs is:
255.255.255.0 as well as connecting to WANs, granted there are other addresses too but this is the most common.

What that log is telling you is this, the capability of your hardware isn't supported by the modem directly, so it will "attempt" to use an alternate method for access and timing.

The best bet is to set your modem / router / gateway for static IP address, for each of the computer, your PS3, etc. Each having a different IP address but the same subnet address, i.e. 255.255.255.0, and have the modem router, listen on the LAN on the same subnet, you can have DHCP enabled for the WAN however, that shouldn't make a difference when you get connected or disconnected.

Another rare topic is a problem with the timing in the modem itself, some devices that connect to it are so timing specific that if it varies too much, your router and other device might get into a little fight and spit up stuff like what I see. PCs tend to have better network interfaces and the software is okay too.

Another really rare problem, is sometimes, it's the software you are running on your console, a very specific game. If it runs fine without that game but you have another networked enabled game and it doesn't kick out. You might want to contact the tech support of the company that made your game and tell them of your plight.

Without further information I can't really give you a more accurate picture of what it might be. What you could try is this, power down your PS3 and modem for about 30 to 60 seconds, bring them back up. Then, don't play a game on the PS3 but surf the web when you are connected and wait to see if you get a drop out. If it doesn't drop the timing could be related to the game you are playing on it. Then we could do some specific tests to see what it is.

By the way, the stats for your modem connection look fine, so it's not a modem problem in terms of staying connected on the WAN (Internet) side.

TechDude

In the case of using DHCP for the cable connection, the customer has no choice. Virtually all of the cable internet companies will not provide, at any cost, a static IP to a residential service customer. The specifications are uploaded to the modem by way of a config file and are not alterable by the customer. Your comments about DHCP being incompatible with certain modems if false. DHCP is a standard protocol used world wide to connect devices on various types of networks including cable internet connections. DHCP is showing an error but is most likely due to an overloaded node server and is not that uncommon.

The subnet mask at 255.255.224.0 is also not an issue. I'm not going to get into the details of this because the explanation is very lengthy, but that simply means that the first and second octet must be matched and more then one address of the third octet will be accessible by the modem along with all addresses of the fourth octet. The subnet mask could be 255.255.255.0 or 24.0.0.0 and the modem would still work.

The other errors he is reporting are related to ToD or Time of Day settings and shouldn't cause any instability in the connection.

It looks to me like he probably has a bad or improper config file or a bad connection to the building causing lost packets.

Contacting the ISP for a service call would be the best course of action.

Wow,

Thanks guys! I have had the ISP (CHARTER) come out three times in a row. All they have ever done in all three cases was hook the cable into a signal box and tell me the connection is good. On the third visit they gave me a different modem, but I get the same results. I can say that the connection is more stable when just surfing the net, but it does drop more than it should. Here is something else I noticed: when I do a speed test from my computer, I get 10ms ping, 10.7Mbs down, and 1.6 up. consistently, HOWEVER, when the PS3 tests I get 6.2 Mbs down and 761.6
up and the numbers fluctuate.

My guess is, since this has been a recent development, that there has been some kind of damage to my building's drop line.

As for the static IP, I agree with Shnerdly because I tried to set one up but my ISP informed me that it was impossible because the cable company basically rents out IP adresses and that they have a short lifespan and are sent via a config file.

I appreciate the time you guys have taken with this issue, and I will continue to troubleshoot this and hopefully be able to post a resolution.
