Cable-Modem.Net Forums / Troubleshooting / Cable modem slower than DSL in my website's hosting servers

I just installed a Cox cable modem, with a direct cat 6 ethernet connection to my laptop computer running Vista Ultimate. In speed tests the cable modem is 15 to 17 faster than my wireless DSL connection. However, when I go to my web site's back office and upload and download files, the cable modem slows down to 1/3 the speed of the DSL line. I know the back office is using a version of Microsoft Framework. The host's technical staff can't figure out the problem. I have raised the virtual page size and uninstalled both my firewall and antivirus protection as a test. Slight speed increase, but still running at 1/3 the DSL. Does this suggest anything to anyone?
Thank you,

Welcome to the forum Dennis Dater.

What were the speed test results and where were they from?

I have to say that it would not surprise me if the problem were related to Vista.

One of the big differences between a Cable connection and a DSL is that with the DSL you have a dedicated line that is generally 1.5mb download speed and 768kb upload. You should always be able to get close to those speeds depending of course on the site your on. The Cable providers generally offer 6mb download and 768kb upload with their standard packages but your actually sharing something like 30mb down and 3mb up with others in you neighborhood. They simply throttle your modem to hold at 6 down and 768 up. When there are many people active on your node it can cause your downloads to get slower and your uploads to get even slower. For example, if you have 10 people all downloading at the same time, their average download speeds would be 1/10 of the total 30mb or 3mb each.

Have you tried an FTP connection to your webserver? Perhaps CoreFTP?

I used speedtest.net, several times. The results varied but Down was from 11.24 Mb/s to 13.75 Mb/s, and Up was from 2.72 Mb/s to 4.11 Mb/s. I am using their preferred service. The DSL was 1.33 Mb/s down and 0.28 Mb/s up.

My web site uses brand new software for the back office (web site/shopping cart/design, etc. as a complete package), and that is the only access I have.

I don't think the problem is the raw cable speed. It's much faster than the DSL, except when I'm on this particular back offce, and then the DSL is much faster. Very confusing to me.

When you were at speedtest.net, did you do all of your downloads from the same server or were they random tests. Your speed is better then the DSL but random tests don't really give you a solid comparison.

I agree that it's not the connection thats the problem. I suspect it's something related to Vista.

Your hosting service should be able to provide you either FTP access or Secure FTP access through a client like WinSCP. I manage a number of websites and thats the only two ways I transfer data to them. This would help you determine where the problem lies.

CoreFTP is for regular FTP access. WinSCP is for Secure FTP access. Both are freeware.

All speed tests were done over several days, using the same server. I live in San Diego, CA and used Los Angeles. My host supplies a special Shopping Cart, which controls all elements of the web site. My interface is a desk top application written in Microsoft Framework. I cannot directly access their servers. I did not contract for a host for my web site - but rather a complete package. They designed and developed, , and upgrade the web site. I load products to sell via my desktop application.

If the problem is with Vista, do you have any suggestions on where to begin looking or another forum to post the problem?

Sorry I wasn't able to help.

You might try the Major Geeks Forum. They have some very talented people there regarding Vista and web development.

Please let us know if they are able to help.
