For a while, the Internet connection in my house worked like this:
cable modem - router
router - "wall"
"wall" - computer
Recently, the router began malfunctioning, so I removed the router from the above chain:
cable modem - "wall"
"wall" - computer
However, the computer is not assigned an IP address, and therefore cannot access the Internet. It is set to obtain an IP address automatically. When the router was used, it was also set to obtain an IP automatically.
What do I do?

the router should have assigned a 192 ip to your cpu, since you disco it you might be getting a 168. try reseting your cable modem and then renewing your ip.

I don't understand your hardware connections.
cable modem - router
router - "wall"
"wall" - computer
What is connecting to the wall? It should just be
Modem to router to computer unless your house is wired for ethernet.

Still doesn't work.

I think my house is wired for ethernet. It has ethernet ports in almost every room.

check the lights on your modem make sure the link or connectivity light is on or flashing. check that your modem is not in standby. did you reset it with the tiny button, you need to use a pen or toothpick. check your local area network does it say connected? is it enabled? click the status tab, what does the ip start with? what type os OS do you have?

Disconnecting the router, then resetting the modem worked. My computer is now assigned a valid IP address, and I can connect to the Internet.
Thanks for your help!

I have been having trouble getting my computer to find the modem, I had to unplug the modem and go and get another one, and I have hooked it up but it still says that a line is unplugged. I have taken everything off the computer and hooked everything back up , and I still get this information. I have called my provider they are showing a strong band to my home, but it shuts down and than doesnt want to come back on. Can anyone help me to find out where they are saying it is unplugged. I have everything plugged in and it is a cable to the computer than the ethernet cable and of course the other thing that is plugged in to the modem also. I need help please. Thanks

I would suggest reading this page and see if it solves your problem.
When you change the first device connected to the ethernet port on a Cable Modem, you MUST restart the modem to get it to recognize the new device.

If cable Modem was replaced, I believe you have to notify the service provider as they need to specifically recognize the equipment. They will ask for several specific pieces of info relating to the cable modem.
