I am helping establish a new cable internet service over an existing cable tv network and have some queries that those in the know may be able to assist with.

I understand that most cable internet services use a fibre/cable hybrid, using fibre to distribution points and coaxial "the last mile". Even virgin medias (UK) new fibre service runs coaxial from the pavement to the house.

The TV service currently has one distribution point, transmitting over distances up to 15km over coaxial cable. Considerable amounts of fibre is out of the question since we are in a developing nation.

Speeds of 2Mbps is the initial target, with the capability of reaching higher speeds left open.

My Questions, what is the MINIMUM amount of fibre required to support this network with 500-2000 subscribers?

What considerations should be mage regarding distribution points, subscribers per cable, distance and sustainability?
