Can't get DSL in our rural area so we are interested in a USB aircard, but have some questions. Do we just need an aircard (looking at AT&T USB Connect Mercury) and data service (AT&T for $60/mo.)? We don't need a land line? Should we have an antenna, and if so, what kind? Can you use a USB extension for connecting the aircard to our PC otherwise it sticks out too far to fit in our enclosure.

Welcome to the forum DAWN SLEAVER.

I just did a brief search on the AT&T USB Connect Mercury. It does not appear to require a land line connection. It runs on the AT&T 3G Wireless Network. If you have an AT&T cell phone, you can make sure it works in your area. If you don't have an AT&T cell phone, I would suggest getting someone that does to come to your location to see if you have a strong enough signal.

You should make sure that the data service gives you enough time to do the things you need on the internet. I think they charge by the byte of data, not by the minute but check with AT&T to clarify that.

I suspect it would work with a USB extension cable and would actually give you the ability move it around to where you get the best signal but check with AT&T to make sure.
