Need your opinion on a generic question in which the answer given would apply to any Modem to Wireless Router connection regardless of model and/or manufacturer of either product. So here's the question....

Which "connection setup" below would theoretically offer better performance or is there no advantage?

Modem with Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T - RJ-45

connection to

Router with Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T - RJ-45

versus

Modem with Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX - RJ-45

connection to

Router with Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T - RJ-45

Thanks to all who reply!

Welcome to the forum ajtrek.

The only difference I see in your options is that one modem has a gigabit port and the other does not.

The gigabit to gigabit would clearly offer the bet performance provided you use the correct patch cable being cat6. If you use cat5 on a gigabit connection it will usually cause lost packets which will slow down the connection.

The only cable modems I am aware of that have a gigabit port would be DOCSIS 3.0 modems and they would provide the best performance on the cable connection as well due to the technology they use which is referred to as channel bonding.

If you are still looking for a router, make sure the WAN port and the switch ports are all gigabit and also make sure they are all listed as full duplex meaning they send and receive data at the same time instead of half duplex which can only do one at a time.

If your interested, here is a link to some detailed information on home networks. On that page there is also a link to more information on the DOCSIS specifications.
