I have charter communications. I have 2 seperate modems and 2 seperate ip's.
i allso have have 2 phone lines. Each modem/ip is supposed to be getting 20 meg
Thats a total of 40 meg. after adding the 2 phone numbers, i feel the one service drop/line coming from the pole to my house, cannot handle that much bandwidth...I know about eletricity, and amp loss. but know nothing of bandwidth.
seems every wire has to have its limits...Can the one line comeing to house handle all this?? I keep having low speeds and lag on games..

Bandwidth is an alloted amount of data per given period that can be transfered. It can be restricted by the type of cable used but is more often limited by software means. The 20meg service you speak of is 20mbps. (Megabytes per Second) That would be the maximum per modem but not sustainable meaning you share the overall node bandwidth with others in your neighborhood. Lets say the node bandwidth is 100mbps and there are 20 people on the node. They wouldn't all be able to run at 20mbps. In fact, if everyone were on at the same time and doing downloads, they would each be getting about 5mbps. The odds of everyone being on all the time are extremely remote so thats why they sell the service the way they do.

You should also be aware that the download speed is affected by your uploads as well. In order for a download to happen, an upload must request it first and then every few packets of download require an upload to confirm the download. This is especially true in online games. Every time you move your man, an upload occurs to change your position on the screens of the other players.

As far as the single cable to you home, it should be able to handle both cable modems without a problem. I have worked on service in 6 unit apartments that had a single drop and the service was excellent.

The lags could be due to the peak times of the day on your node which are usually from about 3:00 in the afternoon to about 9:00 in the evening.

two big factors of bandwidth are Megahertz and Megabits

Megahertz is like the highway. the more hertz the more lanes. a common rg6 coax cable is is rated about 1.5 Gigahertz. most cable companys have a frequency spectrum between 5-800mhz which they use to deliver your voice data and video services.

Megabits are the cars on the highway. with some cable companys going to docsis 3.0 and delivering 50+Meg download speeds. the single cable should be to handle 2 modems no problem along with 2 phone lines.

does charter have a download speed test on thier homepage website? if so what are your download speeds? if not find a download speed test page and see where your at. after the first test turn off any firewalls or spyware programs and p2p clients like msn messenger and any other programs which may be using alot of memory like limewire. once you have all these closed try the test agian and see if there is any difference. its best to close as many programs as you can while playing online games.

is your game connection wireless? the cable company where im at , insight comm, tested their throughput on 20.0 wireless service and was only able to acheive 16mbps download at best when wireless. but when wired got the full 20.0 download speeds.

most of the slow speed issues we see are related to the customers pc. but there are times where signal integrity is the cause. if you can go to your modems default gateway page and post the upstream and downstream power levels. i will let you know if there is a problem or not.
